Frequently Asked Questions
What type of paint can I use on my garage door?
Our Amarr manufactured steel doors are pre-painted with a factory-applied finish that is suitable to be repainted with a wide variety of 100% acrylic exterior grade latex paints. When painting your door, follow the paint manufacturer’s instructions. No warranty of compatibility is made or implied by Amarr. Painting pre-painted steel doors voids the paint finish warranty.
What type of lubricant should I use on my garage door?
We recommend using a silicone based lubricant. You can purchase garage door specific lubricant from us or at your local hardware store.
What type of light bulbs should I use with my garage door opener?
It depends on the type of opener you use. CFL and LED bulbs may interfere with your garage door opener.
GE stated that you should avoid using a CFL bulb near electronic devices. This would include your garage door opener.
The following was stated on General Electric’s website.LiftMaster has addressed this interference issue on their latest garage door openers and has created a compatibility list which you can find here.
Do I need a permit for a new door installation?
Yes, a permit is required to ensure your garage door has been properly installed and is Hurricane rated.
Permits are required to construct, enlarge, alter, repair, move, demolish or change the occupancy of a building or structure, Section 105.1 of the Florida Building Code
Can I purchase torsion springs over the counter from R & R Garage Doors and install them myself?
No.
Due to the dangers associated with high spring tension, which can cause serious injury or even death and insurance guidelines we cannot sell torsion springs to the public. Not only are torsion springs arguably the most dangerous part of your door, replacement requires special safety precautions and tools.
We do however, sell extension springs over the counter.
Should I lock my garage door?
If you do not have an electric garage door opener installed a lock is recommend. Our standard Amarr steel doors are sold without locks since most garage doors are used with garage door openers. We suggest purchasing optional locks if you do not have an electric opener installed.
If you do have an electric garage door opener installed, if may not be necessary to have a lock. Newer and properly installed electric openers make it improbable that someone would be able to lift your door from the outside.
DASMA, the trade association for the garage door industry, discourages homeowners from attaching a lock when an opener has been installed, because too frequently, a child or other family member will accidentally lock the door. If someone then tries to open the door using the electric opener, the opener will pull against the lock causing the door to be damaged.
